10 days ex Phnom Penh - trip code APKT09
US$1450 (single room optional for US$350)
The Mekong Delta is the rice bowl of Vietnam. Every inch of this fertile soil that exists between the rivulets of the Mekong as it splinters to the sea are farmed. This densely populated area contains lots of small, well made trails with little traffic that follow canals and make for fantastic cycling.
We start our ride in the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, a city with a certain broken charm that is pulling itself out of years of decay and into a prosperous future. We cycle to the picturesque coast of Cambodia where we explore old french towns and Phu Quoc, the last frontier of Indochinese beaches before cycling through the food bowl of Vietnam on small trails and paths to Saigon, the commercial capital of Vietnam. This is a trip for anyone who appreciates contrast in cultures and anyone who enjoys getting closer to the real country on a bike.
Itinerary
Days 1-2 | Cycle to Takeo & Kep
Our first day we are straight onto the bike and into the countryside south of Phnom Penh. We take two days cycling through picturesque open countryside and past limestone hills to reach the seaside town of Kep, once popular with French Colonialists.
Days 3-5 | Phu Quoc
We cross the border into Vietnam at the Southern most border crossing, only recently opened to foreigners. We take a boat to the Phu Quoc Island, a relatively untouched piece of Vietnam where we enjoy some beach time and soem terrific island biking.
Days 6-8 | Cycle the Mekong Delta
After returning to the mainland, We trace the Vietnam Cambodia for a day and then criss cross our way through the fascinating Mekong Delta, where food is being grown everywhere you look. We pass through small trails and paths that only two wheeled transport can travel on and we learn about the traditions of the Delta people. We finish our main ride in Can Tho, a bustling Delta city.
Days 9-10 | Saigon
After taking some time to explore the floating market, a classic Mekong Delta moment, we travel by car to the bustling commercial hub of Vietnam, Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). After an afternoon walk, we celebrate our ride with a final meal.
