3 days Saigon - trip code APVA10
US$460 (single room optional for US$45)
The Mekong Delta, where the great river nears the end of its 4900 kilometre journey, branches off into hundreds of rivulets, making this flat area in the south of Vietnam some of the most fertile in South East Asia.
Cycling the Delta is an experience you will never forget. As your guide takes you weaving through the canal trails and orchard paths, across ferries that sometimes only fit half a dozen people, and into the charming villages and towns that this area is known for. As much an eating tour as a biking tour, the cuisine of this area will delight as will the friendly, welcoming people.
This trip is a great way to experience the southern corner of Vietnam and is just a short drive from Saigon. It also ties in well with our Saigon to Hanoi Express to make an all round introduction to Vietnam in ten days.
Itinerary
Day 1 | Saigon to Ben Tre
After meeting your guide at your Saigon Hotel, we take a drive south-east into the Delta. We have a coffee in My Tho and then set out on the bikes on small trails and quiet back roads to Ben Tre, an area made up of three islands, known for its delicious coconut desserts.
Day 2 | Ben Tre to Tra On
Today we are well and truly in the Delta. We start out on a boat, then back on the bikes, weaving through canal paths and fruit orchards that sometimes feel like a maze. We take small ferries to get across the many arms of the river and finish up in a small village in Tra On. Here we stay with a local family and learn about their way of life.
Day 3 | Tra On to Saigon
An early morning visit to the floating markets shows where all that produce is going. As vegetables and fruit are hurled from boat to boat and a small row-boat delivers coffee to its customers, we have a moment to enjoy the picture of intense activity unfolding before us. After breakfast we enjoy our last cycle as we make our way up to Vinh Long for lunch. We drive back to Saigon in the afternoon, arriving around 5pm.
