ACCOMMODATION IN JAPAN

Lirene CilliersBy Lirene Cilliers   Posted 27th Dec 2015

Japan doesn’t just do travel — it does experiences. And that extends to where you sleep. Forget one-size-fits-all hotels; here, every stay tells a story. Let’s dive into three iconic types of accommodations that make Japan more than just a destination.

Modern Hotels

Forget cookie-cutter rooms. Japan’s modern hotels range from sleek urban retreats to boutique gems packed with thoughtful touches (hello, heated toilet seats). Expect comfy Western-style beds, en-suite bathrooms, and if you’re lucky, a view that’ll have you staring at city skylines, snow-capped mountains, or — wait for it — a volcano!

Shukubo

A.k.a Monk’s lodgings! For those who want to really get into the zen of things, a stay at a temple is a must. Known as shukubo, these lodgings offer minimalist rooms, futons on tatami mats, and traditional vegetarian meals (don’t knock it till you’ve tried it). You’ll also have the chance to join morning prayers or meditation (how’s that for diving deep into local life?)

One thing to note about some shukubo stays? The bathrooms are shared. But hear us out — this is no ordinary “shared bathroom” situation. These spaces are spotless (seriously, this is Japan we’re talking about), thoughtfully designed, and separated by gender. Plus, many feature serene communal baths where you can soak away the day while gazing at a peaceful garden or listening to the temple’s evening bells.

On our Japan: Shrines & Ancient Cities (Self-Guided Cycle), we stay in a shukubo for just one night, giving you the perfect taste of this unique and unforgettable experience before pedaling onward to new adventures.

Traditional Ryokans

Stepping into a ryokan feels like stepping back in time. Slide open those shoji screens to reveal tatami-matted floors, low wooden tables, and comfy futons. Oh, and did we mention the onsen baths? There’s nothing like soaking in a hot spring while gazing at a moonlit garden. Bliss.

No matter where you lay your head in Japan, each night is as much a part of the adventure as the day. From gazing at the ocean from a modern hotel room to soaking in a steaming onsen at a ryokan or waking up to temple bells at a shukubo, Japan’s accommodations truly transform your journey.

When you book with us, we’ll make sure you’re staying in places that reflect the spirit of Japan — unique, welcoming, and full of charm. Whether it’s on our guided or self-guided tours, we’ve handpicked accommodations that take your experience to the next level.
