Evening Cycling Food Tour in Bangkok

Come hungry and prepared to explore the backstreets of Bangkok on a bike food tour of the city's best local cuisine. We will only take you to the discreet locations that ordinary Bangkokians hangout. One highlight of the food tour (apart from the delicious food of course) is cycling Bangkok's maze of back streets and alleys to find these out of the way eateries.
Cycling through Bangkok's deserted markets and back alleys, we will stop at several distinct locations to taste the different cuisines of the city's original settlers - Indian, Chinese and Thai. This culinary exploration of Bangkok starts after the market traders have closed up their stalls allowing for an easy pedal through the backstreets of the royal district of Rattanakosin Island, the alleys of India and China town then beyond to the other side of the river where we meander the lanes of Old Bangkok, otherwise known as Krung Thonburi.

We promise there will be something tasty for everyone and vegetarians are more than welcome to join. Come cycle with us to discover a different side of Bangkok's food culture on this unique cycling food tour.

Tour Itinerary

Start Time: 5:45 pm – End Time: 10 pm

Meet at the Grasshopper Adventures Shop
Meet at the Grasshopper Adventures shop at 5:45 pm near Khaosan Rd. (please see the map below). After a quick fitting, the 'Bangkok Food Adventures by Bike' tour begins. The bike tour will depart at 6:15 pm sharp.

Little India
Salty & Sweet Indian treats come at the first food stop in Bangkok's little India. Park your bikes next to one of the original canals protecting Rattanakosin Island. Entering the Indian eatery, you may feel that you have just stepped out of Bangkok and onto the streets of Calcutta. Rest assured this, too, is authentic Bangkok.

Sampeng Lane
The narrow backstreet of Sampeng Lane is the birthplace of Bangkok's Chinatown. Once the home of brothels and opium dens, today's modern Sampeng is a teeming wholesale market during the day, but after dark, the long alleyway is deserted making it a great place to cycle while avoiding the congested streets of Chinatown. Reaching the end of Sampeng Lane, a small side lane becomes an outdoor eatery at night, featuring foods of Malay and Chinese origin. Putting the bicycles aside for a bit we will fill our tummies a little more.

Crossing the River of Kings
Disappearing into another twisting maze of back alleys, we'll pedal our way to the ferry crossing to Khlong San Market, once the terminus of one Bangkok's original railway lines. This busy ferry crossing runs late at night shuttling Bangkokian's from one side of the Chao Phraya River to the other. Fortunately, cyclists and their bikes are more than welcome to cross the river here too.

Tha Din Daeng - The Old Traders Port
Now wending with our bikes through lanes of warehouses and shophouses of Old Bangkok, we will burst into the lively night market of Tha Din Daeng. Tha Din Daeng was once a traders port for goods arriving by sea and going up the Chao Phraya. The original settlers were an ethnically diverse group of traders, but today the descendants of Chinese settlers dominate the area giving Tha Din Daeng the nickname of Bangkok's second Chinatown. It has less of the glitz of the original Chinatown but with a vibrant night market full of tasty food to discover this is a great next stop. Your guide will take you on a walk selecting a range of specialty foods before sitting you down at a street-side table to enjoy the final meal of the night.

Memorial Bridge and the Flower Market
Back on the bikes with all pangs of hunger banished, you will bike over the Memorial Bridge with its magnificent views of the Chao Phraya River then bike through the largest wholesale flower market in Thailand. (Sorry folks. We will not spend much time here, that is reserved for our 'Bangkok Night Ride.')

The Giant Swing and the Grasshopper Shop
Cycling from the Flower Market back to the Grasshopper Shop, you will stop for one last photo op in front of one of Bangkok's iconic landmarks, the Giant Swing. The Giant Swing or Sao Ching Cha, is a relic of a Hindu ritual no longer performed today. From here pedal back to the Grasshopper Adventures shop and with tummy full, say farewell your guide for an evening of dreams biking Bangkok's backstreets and delicious local food. The 'Bangkok Food Adventures by Bike' food tour officially concludes around 10 pm.

This bike tour is generally an easy night ride over short distances through quiet back streets and alleyways. There are some narrow sections but you can always walk these if you are not comfortable. There are some main roads to cross but we do this as a group and the Bangkok drivers are very courteous when it comes to crossing the road.

As we cycle at night and in market areas, this tour is not suitable for children under 12 years old riding alone. Children in baby seats or riding a tag-along may join.
