Cycle the Mandalay Countryside

This is a chance to discover another side of Mandalay and daily life in Myanmar’s second-largest city. Take a leisurely ride to the outskirts of the city, and through the countryside, in a part of Mandalay few visitors see. On the way back to the city, enjoy lunch at a Tea Shop and sample some of Mandalay’s most famous dishes.

Tour Itinerary

Gather at the Grasshopper Shop
We start the tour at 7:30 from our conveniently located shop and begin our bike ride through the back lanes to get out of town. Along the way we pass through fresh markets, lively neighbourhoods and head for the north east of the city.

Countryside Riding
After only a short pedal we find ourselves in the true countryside where farmers tend to their fields and villagers go about daily rituals that have remained unchanged for decades, if not longer. Water buffalo lazily roll in the mud, goats nibble at the foliage, and friendly locals wave from all directions, curious at the sight of visitors on bicycles.

Village Life
Along the tour we make some interesting stops, first passing a truly local monastery and, if we are lucky, we might be invited inside to see some hidden treasures from the royal palace. Continuing our ride the next stop is a local fresh produce market to learn about the different goods on sale.

Returning to the bikes we continue to ride our way to the countryside, stopping at a small Hindu temple where you’ll learn how the Hindus came to Myanmar and what important traditions they brought to the country.

Back on the bikes we cycle to the countryside, pedaling through neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the city being greeted by friendly kids on their way to school.

On our route you’ll see how northern Mandalay slowly turns from modern suburbs to a rural, peaceful area, until you finally pass through a typical central Myanmar village, the perfect place to learn about their way of life and their different crops. On our rise back to town we stop at a tea shop for some delicious snacks and tea, returning to the Grasshopper Adventures shop at around 12:00 noon.

PLEASE NOTE: you should wear clothing suitable for this activity: quarter length pants, shorts, t-shirts are all advisable, as are comfortable closed shoes. Sunscreen is also a must.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

This tour is all about getting you out of busy Mandalay to explore a side to local life by bicycle that you would otherwise miss within the confines of the city. It's a great perspective on the lives of the locals for some authentic cultural immersion.

Impeccably maintained Merida mountain bikes with a helmet are provided. The bikes have front suspension, full hydraulic brakes a comfortable saddle and an upright riding position. We also provide a refillable water bottle.

An experienced English speaking, local leader will host you on this trip who is well spoken, very well informed, and charming. Our leaders are often cited as being the main highlight of the tour. We use local guides who have a passion for their country and are always well informed on topics ranging from history, politics, cuisine and importantly local customs and cultures. Our leaders will take pride in introducing you to every aspect of their country while looking out for your safety and comfort at all times.

Local snacks are provided during the tour, and clean water is always available to keep you well hydrated.

This tour is guaranteed for a minimum of just 1 traveler. And we limit the group size to only 10 travelers so that you get all the attention you want in an intimate group.

Great tour in Mandalay's countryside. We enjoyed a n interesting and informativ tour with our Guide Than. We drove to Innwa by car and there we began the cycling tour. We visited some local industries and later ancient pagodas and monasterys while cycling through the beautiful countryside. After the ferry we visited a cotton weaving enterprise in Amanapura before the sunset at U-Bein on the Boat. Most of the time we were off the beaten tracks and Than and the cardriver did everything to make us happy. We recommend this tour which was organized perfectly, thank you very much Than!
