Overview

Native Americans called the Everglades, Pahayokee, or 'grassy waters.' But the waters of the Everglades are more than just grassy, they are extraordinary; fields of sawgrass, marshes and mangroves, home to endangered, rare and exotic wildlife.

Our multi-active adventure takes us deep into the Everglades and continues south by bike, exploring the heart and soul of southern Florida, introducing you to the people and places that have intrigued for generations.

Along our route, kayak through seagrass to an off-shore state park steeped in history, cycle a highway over the waters of Florida Bay to Hemingway's favorite haunt, Key West, rich in history and culinary delights. Pedal the quaint alleyways or join our optional tour by seaplane to America’s coral reef National Park, Dry Tortugas, site of the spectacular Fort Jefferson.

Join our expert naturalists and guides on a fun and active journey leading to America's southern tip, and explore a world of natural wonders few realized existed so close to home.

Meet this morning near Miami International Airport and transfer to Shark Valley Visitor Center and a morning ride on the Shark Valley Trail, a bikeway unlike any in the world. Cycle past native wildlife, birds, even alligators, all seemingly oblivious to our presence. A thrilling airboat ride takes us deeper into the Everglades to explore its wildlife and wild spaces and to meet descendants of the Miccosukee Indians, a native American tribe living in the Everglades. At Big Cypress, our naturalist leads us on a mesmerizingly beautiful ‘wet walk’ under the native canopy enveloped in delicate ferns, orchids and bromeliads and wide variety of bird species.

By early afternoon we transfer to Islamorada, famous for its tropical climate and small town charm. Group cocktails at sunset cap our first day, a spectacular introduction to the Everglades and the road to Key West. Islamorada’s highly regarded restaurants offer a wide variety of dining options from casual to formal. Our team will help with recommendations and reservations.

Awake today to an early morning stretching class by the pool.  After a hearty breakfast, our marine biologist leads our kayaking adventure to an island just offshore. This isn’t just any island, Indian Key Historic State Park is a ghost town which improbably was the county seat of Miami Dade County in the mid 1800s. Now uninhabited, you can still kayak through the mangroves and walk the roads of the original village, past the ruins of historic buildings.

This afternoon relax by the pool or grab a beach cruiser and explore the shops and restaurants of Islamorada.  A cold beer or glass of wine at sunset concludes our day again with dinner recommendations to enjoy a night with new friends from the tour.

A true cycling adventure awaits as we pedal Florida’s Overseas Heritage Trail. The route and historic bridges are courtesy Henry Flager and his ambitious plan to extend the railway to Key West. With stops to explore and surrounded by seas on both sides, our island hopping affords one of the most beautiful days of cycling imaginable. Those who wish can join our early morning stretching class by the pool.

Pedaling into Key West, replete with gingerbread mansions and tinned-roof conch houses you’ll fight the urge to pull out a Hemingway novel or Tennessee Williams play, or settle back with Jimmy Buffet on your playlist and call the place home.

Dinner tonight on your own with assistance from our local guides to find the perfect spot in the old town of Key West.

Good morning Key West!  Wake & stretch to get the day started and feeling limber. The main tour today features classic beach cruisers as we set off to discover the heart, soul and quirky side of this charming town visiting spots well off the tourist path. Pedal down quiet fruit laced streets to discover the history of Key West, often referred to as the Conch Republic to locals.

Today you may wish to join our optional tour of the Dry Tortugas National Park and historic Fort Jefferson by seaplane, which is rated the number #1 outdoor activity in Key West on TripAdvisor - See the full day's optional itinerary here.

This evening is our last dinner together as a group so we'll be celebrating the occasion appropriately. The farewell ‘Sundowner’ dinner closes the chapter on our Florida Everglades and Key West Adventure.
