Overview

Your adventure kicks off in Coimbra, a city straight out of a Harry Potter book. A quick train ride from Porto or Lisbon, its historic charm sets the stage for your journey.

Pedal your way from the tranquil Zorro River Beach to the storybook village of Aguieira. As you cruise along the Ecopista do Dão, where trains once carried Portugal's treasures, you'll be gliding through rolling hills and lush greenery that beg for a few photos — and maybe a snack break, or three.

The scenery? Oh, it’ll leave you breathless — in the best way possible. We'll lace up our hiking boots for the Rota de S. João de Jerusalém route, where medieval charm and panoramic views collide. And just when you think it couldn’t get any better, the Douro Valley rolls in with its centuries-old vineyards — because what’s a Portuguese journey without a few wines to sample?

Indulge in feasts where good food and great wine prove that the Portuguese truly know what life is about. With your expert Tour Leader — who knows all the best spots — you’ll savor everything from Portugal’s famous custard tarts to freshly grilled sardines and zesty piri-piri chicken. Trust us, you’ll want to enjoy every bite — maybe even twice!

As the sun tips its hat goodbye, we've rounded up the comfiest hotels for some chill time on your terms. Whether you're in the mood to float serenely in the pool, lose yourself in the pages of your favorite novel, or rally your newfound friends for a game of cards, the evenings are yours to unwind, your way.

Portugal isn’t just a destination; it’s an adventure that stays with you l-o-n-g after the ride ends.

What’s the riding like?

This tour is Riding Level 3, which means you can expect to cycle an average of 30 mi (48 km) per day — and usually no more than around 45 mi (72 km) — with occasional breaks to soak up the sights. The terrain is more varied, with some uphill climbs, so you’ll need to be generally fit if you’re on a standard bike.

In Portugal, expect a smooth ride on mostly paved roads as we cover about 139 mi (224 km) through charming landscapes and gentle hills, adding just the right touch of challenge to our journey!

Need a boost?
E-bikes are available to boost your pedal power — there’s an additional fee for $200, so just give our Customer Service team a call to book one for this tour. And if your backside needs a break — or you just fancy a breather — our Rest & Ride Vehicle is always on standby.

We'll roll along peaceful country roads and gravel paths, with just a quick dash on a busier road. A few cheeky climbs take us to our cozy hotel & spa, turning that well-deserved relaxation time into pure bliss!

As the sun sets, we’ll gather for a welcoming dinner at our hotel — your chance to swap stories, savor the mouthwatering flavors of Portuguese cuisine, and, yes, finally nail down each other’s names!

Rise and shine! After a hearty breakfast to fuel your day's adventure, it’s time to hop on your trusty steed (the two-wheeled kind, of course!) and set off along the scenic Ecopista do Dão.

This path is a cyclist's dream — a blissfully peaceful route where traffic is just a distant memory and nature takes the spotlight. Following a former railway line, we'll cycle on smooth trails that are perfect for taking in the gorgeous views at your own leisurely pace.

As we pedal through lush forests and alongside the gentle Dão River, we'll roll past vineyards that stretch out like a green wave, ready to be surfed! Don’t be surprised if you find yourself drawing back the air like a fine wine connoisseur — the aroma of ripe grapes and blooming wildflowers is simply irresistible!

Our Tour Leader will reach into their pocket for a light lunch — perhaps some sizzling chouriço, fresh sardines, or a few pastéis de nata (those irresistible custard tarts) for dessert. Heads-up: you’ll want to guard these tasty treasures because they’re too good to share!

Later, we'll roll into the Romanesque town of Viseu, where the evening is all yours. Dive into the pool to cool off, gather your new pals for a friendly (or perhaps not-so-friendly) game of cards, sip on your drink of choice by the pool, or let the sauna melt the day away.

Swap your bike for boots today! We’re setting off on a journey that’s equal parts scenic and historic, with a little wine-fueled fun along the way.

After breakfast, we’ll whisk you away to a beautiful vineyard estate, tucked away in the rural countryside of Viseu — just the spot for a day of walking, wining and unwinding.

Lace up those hiking boots and let’s hit the trail! We’ll hike along the Rota de S. João de Jerusalém, a path that whispers tales of knights and legends. Yep, you’re walking where the Knights Hospitaller once trod — so if you feel a sudden urge to grab a sword, you’re not alone.

After conquering the trail, we’ll reward you with a well-earned feast. Think rustic charm meets refined flavor, as you dive into a spread of local bites paired with organic wines that’ll have you nodding like a true expert (even if your wine knowledge is mostly “this is delicious!”). And these aren’t just any wines — these grapes have roots as deep as the region’s history, grown organically in true farm-to-bottle style. Saúde (cheers) to centuries of tradition!

After a day of hiking, history and heavenly wine, we’ll head back to Viseu where the evening is yours to rest, relax and recharge for whatever tomorrow brings. After a day like this, you’ll sleep like royalty!

This morning, we’re kicking off our cycling adventure from the enchanting chapel of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lapa, where rugged cliffs and sweeping views of the lush valley promise more scenic beauty than your camera roll can handle.

The first leg of our ride? A picturesque weave through the rolling countryside — think farms, forests and quaint villages where every dog seems to know your name (or at least thinks they do).

Then it’s all downhill from here (literally) as we roll our way into the heart of the Douro Valley. Yes, those deep, terraced valleys famed far and wide for their drop-dead gorgeousness.

As every turn brings a fresh "wow," and possibly the urge to pen a heartfelt sonnet, we'll finally coast into Pinhão, a tiny town with calm, relaxing village vibes. This is where scenic overload meets a robust wine culture and honestly, it feels like a bit of a victory lap. Here, amidst the unbeatable views and the gentle flow of the Douro River, we’ll have our moment to bask in the sights and sounds of the valley.

From Pinhão, we’ll hop on a short-yet-sweet train ride to the city of Régua where your cozy haven for the night awaits.
On the agenda for tonight? Dive into the hotel pool for a refreshing swim before feasting beneath the stars — will it be a savory prego (steak sandwich) or a comforting caldeirada (fish stew) that takes center stage?

Strap on your helmet, today’s adventure kicks off with a spectacular cycle loop through the breathtaking Douro Valley, where the hills are alive with the sound of… well, your bike tires rolling on the road!

We’ll pedal our way up to Castelo de Lamego, a medieval gem that serves up views of the Douro Valley so breathtaking, you might just forget to blink! You'll be surrounded by terraced vineyards, lovingly sculpted by nature and nurtured by generations of wine-loving locals.

After soaking it all in (and likely wondering how you can move in and become the new castle lord), we’ll cruise down the breezy path back to Peso da Régua, a riverside town that’s the heart and soul of the Douro wine region. Expect to spot charming quintas (wine estates) dotted across the hillsides, each with its own story to tell.

Later, we’ll hop aboard a traditional Rabelo boat for a leisurely one-hour cruise along the Douro River. Picture this: the sun sparkling on the water, a soft breeze tousling your hair and stunning vineyards rolling by. It’s a wine lover’s paradise! Fun fact: did you know that these vineyards have been producing Port wine since the 18th century? Now that’s some serious dedication to the grape!

After taking in all the beauty and history, we’ll return to dry land for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. With a delightful Port tasting, we’ll sip, swirl and clink our glasses for one last cheers to our unforgettable *Port*ugal adventure!

Can we really say goodbye without one final ride? We think not!

For your grand finale in the Douro Valley, we’ll set off on an encore loop ride – a delightful little jaunt for a final dose of vine-gazing, breeze-savoring and memory-making moments.

As our journey reaches its sweet conclusion, give a big bear-hug to your amazing Tour Leader and your stellar cycling crew.

Next stop? Porto! With a full heart, your mind might just start planning your next adventure. Did you know we have an excellent trip in the Costa Brava?
