Explore Busan & Cycle Gyeongju
With its stunning coastal location plus deep artistic and cultural traditions, Busan has fast become a ‘must-see’ city of northern Asia. Young, vibrant and self-aware, exploring Busan will enrich your understanding and appreciation for modern South Korea. Some of Busan’s highlights include seaside dining, 450+ spas & hot springs, Korea’s best street food and largest beach, a neighborhood dedicated to used books, Gamcheon – a village district famous for its street art, and host of one of Asia’s top contemporary art festivals and the country’s most celebrated film festival, just to name a few…
We’ll also be jumping on the bikes to explore nearby Gyeongju. Hard to pronounce but fascinating to explore, this town has been compared to an open-air museum and is therefore uniquely special for touring by bike. The location boasts many historic treasures and so there is something new to marvel at behind each bend. This tour extension will highlight Busan’s charm and vibrance, in contrast to Seoul’s modernity, and give you a memorable day of cycling in Gyeongju – It’s a fantastic way to bookend your visit to South Korea.

Day 1

Free day in Busan
Our main tour concludes around lunchtime today after a morning touring the city and fish market. We have a big day of adventure planned for you tomorrow, so from here the afternoon is free to explore the city or simply relax at the hotel. You may wish to try one of the many spas in town to soak those post-tour muscles, or maybe a stroll on the beach is in order. As always, your Grasshopper guide can happily assist with suggestions for the day and also with dinner recommendations.

Explore Gyeongju by Bike
This morning we’ll transfer one hour from Busan to Gyeongju, a remarkable history-filled town which Lonely Planet describes as Korea’s “Museum without walls”. It’s not only an alternative museum concept though but also a fantastic place to explore by bike. Sites include Cheomseongdae, the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in Asia, the Gyochon traditional village and the beautiful Woljeong Bridge, a wooden structure nearly 1400 years old!
Following yet another delicious lunch we’ll jump back on the bikes and ride to Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, first constructed in the 7th Century, before cycling on to our final stop at Bunhwangsa, the oldest stone temple of the Silla Dynasty. Arriving back in Busan around late afternoon the remainder of the day yours to enjoy as you wish. Dinner tonight is free choice and could be a good chance to explore the city’s famous street food, your guide can happily assist with suggestions.

Good Morning Busan – Tour concludes
For early risers, sunrise from Haeundae Beach is the perfect start to your final morning and a memorable way to see-off Busan. After breakfast there’s time for last minute shopping, revisiting Gamcheon or tackling one of the many traditionally styled marketplaces.
Onward travel is quite straightforward as most international departures leave from either Busan or Seoul. For those departing from Seoul, a high speed trains connect from Busan in just over three hours.
